Cairns students can win iPad in photo comp

School students in the Cairns region are encouraged to start snapping and tell their stories of water for a chance to win an Apple iPad for their school.

The photographic competition, inspired by the “Caring For Our Water Catchment” theme of National Water Week, will allow students to communicate their experiences and attitudes towards the region’s magnificent waterways and natural wonders.

“This competition is part the Cairns Regional Council’s Our Water, Our Backyard education campaign to help our young people understand the value of water,” Mayor Val Schier said.

“That includes where it comes from, how it’s used and why it’s important to take care of it.”

“The Cairns region is surrounded by spectacular natural wonders, right in our backyard.

“Sustainable water supply and use is an essential part of our way of life and necessary for the wellbeing of our world-famous backyard and economic viability.

“We’re sure there are budding young photographers out there, who have a real talent for capturing the essence of our amazing backyard.  We are keen to see how they perceive water.”

The competition will be open until October 7 and winners will be announced during National Water Week, October 16-22.  A selection of photographic entries will be publicly displayed.

The competition is open to primary and high school students throughout the Cairns region. Students are required to tell a story based on the theme of water, using a title and up to five photographs. 

Teachers and classmates are encouraged to review students’ visual stories.  Photographs are to be submitted together with a review from their teachers and classmates. 

Winning entries will receive an Apple iPad for their school.
