Cairns Chronology

Cairns Regional Council was formed from the amalgamation of Cairns City Council and Douglas Shire Council. The former Cairns City Council evolved from a number of Governing Bodies of Cairns from the 1870s to 1995, while the Douglas Shire Council formed from the Douglas Divisional Board in 1903.

The Cairns Region has an interesting history which includes many exciting events dating back to the first discovery in 1770. This timeline contains details of many significant events associated with the growth of the region including the construction of the first roads, introduction of gas street lights and the opening of significant buildings.
