More about the Local Area Multicultural Partnership (LAMP) Programme

Since its inception in 2000, the Cairns Regional Council LAMP program has been an important Council and community resource that focuses on communities from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds (DCLB).

The programme is a key component in the implementation of the Multicultural Queensland Policy, that aims to develop a wide range of Community Relations strategies to make Council services more accessible and equitable for residents and visitors from DCLB.

The goal of LAMP is to work within the existing structures of Council by encouraging a more inclusive and holistic approach in the way Council services are delivered, conducts its consultations, develops policies, plans, strategies, programmes and initiatives, with communities where language or cultural barriers may affect their capacity to engage or participate in the broader community.

Many of the programmes, research and initiatives developed through this programme are also promoted to other local community service organisations, to encourage them to also become more equitable and accessible in the way they deliver their services.  LAMP bases its work on the principles of the Queensland Multicultural Policy by pro-actively engaging communities.  The programme encourages community participation and social cohesion by creating opportunities for communities to work collaboratively, become active and involved in the decision making processes of Council and engage with the broader community.
