Cairns Regional water sources

Cairns Regional Council ensures high quality water provision to approximately 160,000 people from the Daintree in the north to Bartle Frere in the south.

Northern supply systems

The Mossman, North Mossman, Port Douglas, Newell Beach, Cooya Beach, Cassowary and Mowbray communities are supplied with water from Rex Creek. This water is treated at the Mossman Water Treatment Plant. Miallo, Rocky Point, Port Douglas Views and Wonga communities are supplied with water from Little Falls Creek. This water is treated at the Whyanbeel Water Treatment Plant.

The Daintree and surrounding communities are supplied with water from Intake Creek. This water is treated at the Daintree Water Treatment Plant.

Cairns

The Cairns community is supplied with water from Copperlode Falls Dam and Behana Creek. Water from Copperlode Falls Dam supplies areas to the north of Cairns and the Cairns city. The Behana Creek source supplies areas south of Cairns as well as the Cairns city. This water is treated at the Freshwater Creek Treatment Plant at Tunnel Hill.

Southern rural supply systems

Small supply systems provide for residents south of Aloomba and the Mulgrave Valley. These systems range from bores to creek supplies. Treatment includes mechanical filtration and disinfection with chlorine.
