Airport mangrove boardwalk

The Jack Barnes Bicentennial Mangrove Boardwalk was the Cairns Bicentennial Community Committee's official project for 1988.

Named after a past expert on the region's Box Jelly Fish, Dr Jack Barnes, the boardwalk is a lasting contribution to Australia's Bicentenary and is a fine education resource for the city of Cairns.

  • Location:  Situated off Airport Avenue, Aeroglen - adjacent to Swampy Creek
  • Mangrove Walks:  Weaving through 11 easily identifiable mangrove species, the boardwalk follows two routes:
  • Northern Route - to Middle Creek is a 700m loop.
  • Southern Route - to Swampy Creek covers a distance of 600m.

Walks each take about 35 minutes and have been signposted with relevant information to alert people to the unique characteristics of the mangrove ecosystem. View the map located in related documents.
