Edmonton Leisure Centre

The Edmonton Leisure Centre will be under construction from June 2012.

The Edmonton Leisure centre is a dual purpose facility and will be used to provide;

  • Leisure facilities for residents of Cairns’ southern corridor to use
  • A safe haven in times of disaster

The Edmonton Leisure centre is being constructed to meet category 5 wind loading standards and is located on Walker Road, well outside of predicted storm surge and flood risk areas. The centre will be capable of providing shelter for up to 1500 people in the event of a natural disaster.

  • Air conditioning
  • Two multi-purpose indoor sports courts with provision for event seating
  • Storage space
  • Reception area
  • Meeting rooms
  • Kiosk
  • Toilets, showers and changing facilities
  • A generator room

In the event of a power failure, the generator will be activated and further back-up power will be available via emergency batteries stored in the shelter.
