The population of Cairns has been growing steadily since 2011. Estimated population of the Cairns region in 2022 was more than 171,970 (source: .id).

Residential property prices and commercial property rents in Cairns are less than half the cost of major cities, Sydney and Melbourne. Cairns is also one of the more affordable major regions in Queensland; the median price of a house in Cairns in July 2023 was approximately $493,000 (source: Cairns Report July 2023).

Cairns International Airport is Australia's busiest regional airport. Before the COVID-19 pandemic affected travel and tourism, annual visitors through the airport numbered 4.2 million for domestic travellers (spending $2.4 billion) and 863,000 international tourists (spending $1.1 billion).

In recent times, Cairns Airport continues to be among the busiest in Australia. In the 2021-22 financial year, more than 2.5 million passenger movements were recorded at Cairns Airport, making it the seventh-busiest airport in Australia after the capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth,  Adelaide and also Gold Coast.

Our region is part of the agricultural ‘food bowl’ of Northern Australia, which includes the Mareeba, Atherton Tablelands and Innisfail areas, exporting globally from Cairns.

Cairns is home to three shipyards, three marinas, a naval base and the world’s largest travel lift, and is a a base for superyachts.

Cairns is a destination of choice for international students and has two universities that offer a comprehensive range of degrees and courses, James Cook University and CQ University, as well as extensive training facilities and TAFE.

There are several large-scale renewable energy projects, including wind farms, hydro plants, solar and green energy plants, in the region. Councils and partners are striving for Cairns and Far North Queensland to be leaders in the Smart Green Economy.
