Portable advertisements
A portable advertisement (sandwich board) is a freestanding, portable, advertising device placed on a footpath, road reserve or public place.
All portable advertisements proposed to be located on footpaths and/or road reserves or public places under the control of Council shall be registered by Council.
An application for the registration of a portable advertisement shall be submitted to and approved by Council prior to a portable advertisement being placed on a footpath, road reserve or any other public place. The application shall be accompanied by documentary evidence of public liability insurance for an amount of no less than $10,000,000.00 with Council named as a principle insured party.
Where more than one commercial activity is carried out from a single shop, office or tenancy, these commercial activities shall be deemed to be one business for the purpose of this policy.
Council considers the following criterias when assessing applications:
- Siting requirements -

- Arcades
- Above Street level or lane way
- Outdoor dining
- City Place
- All other areas within the City of Cairns
- Size and design
Portable advertisements which are not registered by the nominated date or which are not displayed in accordance with any conditions of registration and the provisions of the Guidelines for Portable Advertisements, may be confiscated.
