Shoulder widening to improve safety on rural roads

Eleven rural roads in Babinda, Bartle Frere, Deeral, Edmonton, Eubenangee and Gordonvale will be widened to improve safety.

Council has allocated more than $1.7 million to through the 2024/25 Pavement Rehabilitation Program (Rural Shoulder Widening), which is supported by $1,055,844 of funding from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

Council officers have undertaken an assessment of the rural road network and identified prioritised sites for the 2024/25 shoulder widening work, based on the current width of the road, hierarchy, traffic volume and the timing of the resealing of the existing road surfacing, to maximise efficiency of the construction work.

The rural roads prioritised for shoulder widening are:

  • Angus St, Babinda
  • Hospital St, Babinda
  • Bartle Frere Rd, Bartle Frere
  • Ellis Rd, Bellenden Ker
  • Harvey Creek Rd, Bellenden Ker
  • Ross Rd, Deeral
  • Deppeler Rd, Edmonton
  • Roper Rd, Eubenangee
  • Highleigh Rd, Gordonvale
  • Russell Rd, Gordonvale
  • Sues St, Gordonvale.
