Each year, in the lead up to the annual wet-season Cairns Regional Council endeavours to reduce litter near our urban waterways by partnering with Clean Up Australia to run a series of community clean-up events.

In 2023, 100 volunteers generously donated their time to help collect over 80 bags of litter (equal to 17 full wheelie bins) from urban waterways.

This year, we are thrilled to invite Cairns residents to lend a hand at one of our 2024 clean up events being held in September.

  • Sunday 1 September, 9:30am – 11:30am: Meet at Centenary Lakes Nature Play Space, Greenslopes Street
  • Saturday 7 September, 9:30am – 11:30am: Meet at Giangurra Esplanade Park, Pine Creek, Yarrabah Road
  • Sunday 15 September, 9:30am – 11:30am: Meet at Bana Gindarja Creek, Sinclair Miller Bridge, Ravizza Drive
  • Friday 20 September, 9:30am – 11:30am: Meet at Cairns Central Taxi Rank, McLeod Street

Join a clean-up

Getting involved in a clean-up in your area is a great way to get out, meet your neighbours and help our environment. Clean Up Cairns 2024 events will be announced at a later date.

Families and the community can pick up rubbish from neighbourhoods, parks and waterways.

September is the best time for us to pick up rubbish before the wet season rain washes it out to sea.

If you'd like to get involved in Clean Up Cairns, send us a message using the email address below. We're always open to finding out about good places to run a clean-up event.

You can also get in touch with the Sustainability Team by email or phone.
