We are looking for dog and cat lovers who would like to volunteer to provide some extra love and attention for animals at our Animal Care & Education Centre (ACE).

Council cares for hundreds of pets at ACE each year, and while we do everything we can make to make their stay the best possible, extra affection never goes astray.

Providing much-needed enrichment and socialisation for the lost and surrendered pets improves their overall wellbeing and helps us to rehome them.

We have two volunteer roles available.

Canine Companions, who help out by:

  • Walking and exercising dogs at our facility
  • Socialising with the dogs
  • Basic training (sit, heel)
  • Pats and playtime.

Cat Cuddlers, who help out by:

  • Socialising with the cats
  • Grooming
  • Playing
  • Providing treats and other forms of affection.

As well as the satisfaction and pleasure of working with animals, volunteers can gain valuable skills for use with their own pet or to further their career prospects. Interaction with animals is also proven to have physical and mental health benefits.

Volunteer shifts are two hours: 9.30am to 11.30am; and 1.30pm to 3.30pm, each week day. Volunteers must be 18 years or over.

If you are interested in volunteering, for one or more shifts, please come along to our ACE Volunteer Information Day for more details.

  • Wednesday 27 September
  • 5.30pm to 6.30pm
  • Civic Reception Rooms at Council's Spence Street Administration Building.
