LGMS Risk Excellence Award (2023)


Council's fire risk mitigation strategy was recognised at the Local Government Mutual Services (LGMS) annual Risk Excellence Awards. It provides clarity on agency responsibilities, identifies measures to reduce fire risks, and addresses the use of other fire mitigation measures.

Council was recognised at the 2022 Get Ready Queensland Resilient Australia Awards for doing its part to make Queensland the most resilient state in Australia. The Cairns Resilient Businesses Network, a Council initiative with support from the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, was highly commended.

Council's commitment to World Heritage management, conservation and protection was recognised with the Chair’s Award at the 19th Cassowary Awards, hosted by the Wet Tropics Management Authority in October 2022. The award honours Council's leadership and innovation in environmental stewardship, sustainability and advocacy.

Climate Champions (2021)


Council's sustainability team has been named a Climate Champion at the Cities Power Partnership Awards (the only Queensland council to win an award). The accolade recognises the team's work in engaging industry, community and particularly youth on climate challenges. Council is now developing a Climate Change strategy which will help set a pathway to net zero emissions.

Munro Martin Parklands has received an award from The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA). The win follows the parklands claiming the Award for Excellence at the 2021 Queensland Landscape Architecture Awards.

Design accolade for CPAC (2021)


The Cairns Performing Arts Centre has taken out the top award at the 2021 Far North Queensland Architecture Awards. Designed by CA Architects and Cox Architecture in collaboration, it was named the Eddie Oribin award for building of the year, as well as being one of five projects that received regional commendations at the awards on 28 May 2021.

Cairns phones in top recycler award for second year (2021)


Cairns people have recycled a massive 3513 old mobile phone handsets and batteries (totalling 261kg), earning Cairns Regional Council the award for Queensland’s top collector in the 2021 MobileMuster Local Government Awards for the second year running.
