Understory High Film Festival 2024

Calling all young filmmakers!

Understory High is a special platform designed exclusively for high school filmmakers. Running alongside our main Understory Film Festival, this event gives young creatives the opportunity to see their vision come to life on the big screen.

What we're looking for:

  • Short films up to 8 minutes in length
  • All genres welcome: documentaries, dramas, animations, comedies, music videos, and more
  • Creative storytelling from a young perspective

Who can apply:

High school students from North and Far North Queensland, spanning from  spanning from Townsville in the south, to the Torres Strait Islands in the north and west to the Gulf of Carpentaria

Why participate:

  • Chance to have your film screened at a major festival
  • Opportunity to inspire fellow young filmmakers
  • Winning films automatically entered into the main Understory Film Festival
  • Two $500 vouchers for Garricks Camera House courtesy of Essential Screen Skills to be awarded to the Best Overall Filmmaker and People's Choice Award recipients

  • Applications Open: Now
  • Entries Close: Thursday, 5 September 2024
  • Finalist Screening and Awards Event: Friday, 4 October 2024 at the Tanks Arts Centre
