Exhibition Trail: Native Creations Australia

Smithfield Library

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Indigenous heritage at our Cultural Art Showcase featuring the stunning works of Garth Murgha and Estelle Tranby. Discover meticulously hand-carved traditional wooden artifacts, vibrant acrylic paintings, and distinctive jewelery that celebrate the identity and stories of the proud rainforest Bama people.

As artists under the label Native Creations Australia, Garth and Estelle are dedicated to preserving and sharing their cultural narratives through their art. Their passion shines through each piece, reflecting a deep connection to their land and traditions.

Garth Murgha
Garth Murgha is a proud Gungandji man born at the old Yarrabah mission hospital. Having spent most of his life working and camping in the rainforest, Garth draws inspiration from his spiritual connection to the land and sea of his traditional country, as well as his childhood watching his father create artifacts. As a skilled woodcarver, he handcrafts traditional pieces from raw materials found in the rainforest, bringing his heritage to life through his craft.

Estelle Tranby
Estelle Tranby is a proud Djabugay woman born in Cairns. Growing up in Kuranda, she is inspired by her family and elders to carry on her culture through her art. Estelle’s works feature native animals in their natural habitats and dreamtime stories from the Djabugay tribe. She paints with acrylics on canvas and other natural materials such as paper bark, rocks, and artifacts, and she creates distinctive jewelery that reflects her cultural background.

Together, Garth and Estelle work from their home studio in Babinda, where their creations have been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including the prestigious Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF).
