An advertising device is a sign intended for advertising purposes that is:

  • external to a building and visible from a public place; or
  • internal to a building and visible from a road.

It includes any framework, supporting structure or building feature that is provided as part of the advertisement. There are many different types of advertising devices (e.g. Sandwich board sign, Pylon sign, Banner sign, Real estate sign, garage sale sign).

Regulation of advertising devices

Advertising devices in Cairns are regulated by Council's Local Law No.4 (Advertising Devices) 2019 ( PDF, 7.99 MB ). You may need a permit from Council before you can install an advertising device.

This local law identifies whether an advertising device is prohibited, can be installed without a permit or does require a permit from Council before it can be installed.

Council's Local Law No. 1 (Administration) 2016 ( PDF, 3.07 MB ) provides the framework for the administration, implementation and enforcement of Council's local laws and includes definitions for terms used in Local Law No. 4 (Advertising Devices) 2019.
