Cairns Airport
Protecting the natural environment around Cairns Airport
The Cairns Airport is enhancing local biodiversity by creating and managing habitats that support native flora and fauna. This includes the restoration of degraded areas and the establishment of green spaces within the airport precinct.
Conservation of unique ecosystems and species
After conducting an audit of the surrounding mangrove environment, the Cairns Airport team identified nine different ecosystems, including wetlands and drylands, as well as several endangered species. Cairns Airport is currently working on implementing restoration projects to protect these species and ecosystems. Once these projects are completed, they will move on to the third phase, which will focus on rehabilitation.
“Anybody who has visited Cairns Airport will recognise the incredible mangrove environment that surrounds it.
We’ve been collaborating with the traditional owners, who have great knowledge of land and sea country around the airport. Our goal is to protect these mangroves and enhance them, with projects such as this one to help support and rehabilitate the endangered species that live there.”
Richard Barker, Chief Executive Officer, Cairns Airport
